What can I expect in a visit?

A visit with Dr. Owen may be similar to visits you’ve had with other doctors.  The first visit, though, may take up to an hour.  During this time, a very thorough history will be taken, including questions about diet, lifestyle, stress, environmental exposures, personal and family medical history.  Next, an appropriate physical examination will be performed.  Dr. Owen will determine if blood work, laboratory testing and/or imaging may be necessary.  He always considers a variety of factors before diagnosing and treating his patients.  A treatment plan will be established and Dr. Owen will request that follow- up visits be scheduled according to the treatment plan.  Follow- up visits will allow Dr. Owen and the patient to discuss successes, problems, and questions.  At these visits, Dr. Owen will adjust the treatment plan as necessary.  For patients with acute illnesses, Dr. Owen will decide whether or not a full history is necessary.  These visits may be shorter if a full history is not required for treatment.

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine, is a holistic system, meaning that naturopathic doctors (NDs) strive to find the cause of disease by understanding the patient as a whole.  By definition, naturopathy means treating disease by using nature to assist in the natural healing process.  This may include lifestyle or dietary changes, use of herbal supplements or other natural remedies.  While still having the conventional options available for use (i.e. pharmaceuticals, etc.), NDs try to utilize every available option for the patient taking into account the person as a whole, rather than treating a problem in isolation.  Though NDs do treat chronic and acute illnesses, their emphasis is on prevention of disease and patient education. In researching what ND to use as your healthcare professional, you will find that not all ND’s are alike.  There is a wide range in the manner in which NDs practice medicine.  It is important to find one that fits your needs.  Dr. Owen is an ND who uses both natural, pharmaceutical and synthetic medicines, supplements, dietary changes, and lifestyle changes to design the proper treatment for his patients.  He believes in finding the correct tool for the job.

Can I get a referral, labs, or imaging?

Dr. Owen routinely requests past medical histories, orders labs (blood, urine, saliva, etc...) and imaging (X-Ray, Ultra Sound, CT, MRI etc...) and refers to specialists (cardiologist, surgeons, neurologist, etc...) or the ER when medically necessary. What kind of treatments can I expect? Dr. Owen designs a comprehensive treatment plan for all his patients.  These plans often include, when necessary: prescriptions from pharmacies and compounding pharmacies, herbs, nutraceuticals, vitamins and minerals, nutrition, exercise and lifestyle modifications, and a logical follow-up plan for future visits. Dr. Owen believes that all treatments should be directed, produce results, and help prevent or treat disease.
